Support NPR and PBS
From the May 2, 2025 DoGood Email Newsletter:
As you may have heard, on May 1, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order titled “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Biased Media,” directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to cease all federal funding for NPR and PBS . This order also instructs all federal agencies to identify and terminate any additional funding to these broadcasters.
This move threatens the financial stability of public media organizations that have long been pillars of unbiased news, educational programming, and cultural enrichment.
The Value of Public Media
NPR and PBS reach over 99% of the U.S. population, providing free access to high-quality content. PBS offers educational programming for children and adults alike, while NPR delivers in-depth news coverage and cultural programming. Both organizations play crucial roles in emergency and disaster response systems across many states and communities .
The Impact of Funding Cuts
Nationally the CPB currently receives $535 million annually in federal funds, with local PBS and NPR stations relying on it for a significant portion of their budgets. The executive order not only directs the CPB to halt funding but also instructs all federal agencies to identify and stop any additional funding to the broadcasters and tasks Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with investigating potential employment discrimination violations within NPR and PBS.
